Dr. Elena Zhirukhina, a Teaching Fellow at the Institute of Diplomacy, participated in the Graduate Workshop on Conflict Dynamics held at the Nuffield College, University of Oxford, 20-21 of September 2017. This workshop was supported by the Nuffield College, University of Oxford, the Changing Character of War Centre, University of Oxford, the Centre for International Studies, University of Oxford, and the Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence, University of St Andrews.
The workshop covered a broad range of topics from study of non-violent movements to civil wars. The aim of the workshop was to bring together graduate students working on armed conflict to discuss and receive feedback on their research from their peers and senior researchers. Dr. Zhirukhina presented a working paper titled ‘Attacking the state: tactics of the illegal armed groups in the North Caucasus’ which constitutes a development of the doctoral thesis on the practices of counterterrorism in Russia.
